The design of this Louis XVI style lamp, in solid bronze with a white pleated and laced shade, features classical details with geometric elements that evoke the period. The antique gold finish of the bronze highlights the decoration and its relief. The reference to nature is also present in the light touch of the top of the base of the lamp and its small leaves that reveal the pyramidal body of the lamp. The hexagonal bowl is widened to reveal geometric facets. Two fine pearl chains highlight the top of the bobèche and the bottom of the lamp base. The quality of the design and workmanship is exceptional. Drawing, sand casting, assembly and finishing are all carried out by hand with unparalleled thoroughness, guaranteeing the quality and exemplary work of Lucien Gau's craftsmen and goldsmiths. The craftsmen employed by Lucien Gau work, finish, assemble and patinate the bronzes using the most traditional methods, the heritage of a long tradition of excellence. The bronzes are cast by hand: for each model, the craftsmen model the parts of a lamp, a reference example. For each piece made from this model, a sand mould is made into which the molten bronze is poured. The mould is broken when it is removed and is only used once. This process produces a unique finesse and allows great freedom of design. Once cooled and removed from the mould, each piece undergoes a long process of finishing: deburring, turning, chiseling fine ornamental motifs, polishing and applying the patina are all done by hand and require unique expertise. The most commonly used patinas are old gold, matt pewter, bright gold and antique. Lucien Gau's collections include lights of great elegance and balance of form.
